International Training in Budapest, 18 -22 May
Theatre of the Oppressed in Non-Formal Education with Young Refugees
- How can theatre help young people express experiences that are difficult to put into words?
- How can we create spaces where social injustice can be explored safely – and new possibilities for action tested?
- And how can youth workers apply such methods in a sensitive and discrimination-aware way?
This international training focuses on the Theatre of the Oppressed, developed by the Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal. His approach makes invisible power structures visible and invites participants to actively experiment with alternative ways of acting. Theatre becomes more than artistic expression – it becomes a method for dialogue, reflection, empowerment and social change.
Together, we will explore how these methods can strengthen young refugees and create inclusive, meaningful learning spaces in non-formal education.
No prior experience in theatre is required.
What to expect
- Learning by doing: hands-on theatre exercises based on Theatre of the Oppressed
- A safe and supportive space to explore experiences, emotions and perspectives
- Reflection on how and under which conditions these methods can be used with refugee youth
- Exchange of practices and approaches with colleagues from different countries
- A free afternoon with the possibility to visit Budapest
Who is this for?
- Youth workers, educators and professionals working with young refugees or in the field of forced migration
- Trainers in non-formal education who want to strengthen their facilitation skills and create safer spaces
- Anyone interested in empowerment-based approaches and theatre methods in youth work
People with personal experiences of (forced) migration or racism are especially encouraged to apply. We are committed to creating a space where everyone can share openly and feel respected.
