Building Bridges across Borders

First Transnational Meeting

On March 19th, 2025, partner organizations of the project Empowered by ACTion – Civic Education Crossing Borders gathered at the Jugendakademie Walberberg for their first Transnational Meeting. Beyond networking and coordination, the gathering created a critical space for reflecting on power structures in civil society, education, and youth engagement.

Power-Critical Support Workshop

A key moment was the Power-Critical Support workshop, where participants explored what it means to support one another with awareness of power – from sharing resources and exposing structural inequalities to ensuring transparent decision-making. Using categories such as Power over, Power to, and Power with, the group reflected on how power manifests in our work, how it influences our actions, and what alternative approaches might be possible.

International Exchange and Contexts

An equally important part of the meeting was the international exchange. Each partner organization introduced their work, priorities, and fields of activity – offering valuable insights into the diverse perspectives within the consortium. This also provided an up-to-date picture of the political and social situation in each partner country. Special attention was given to regulations, laws, and practices concerning refugees, migration, integration, and asylum procedures. These shared insights not only fostered mutual understanding of different contexts but also inspired new ideas for solidarity and cross-border collaboration.

Alongside these thematic discussions, the meeting offered an invaluable opportunity for project leads to connect on a personal level, build trust, and lay the groundwork for cross-border cooperation. The consortium discussed how they want to work together, what structures and communication tools are needed, and how to uphold the project’s values in daily practice.

Centering Youth Voices

A guiding question throughout was: How can young people – particularly those with refugee backgrounds or racialized experiences – not only participate, but truly co-create in this project? This led to the first draft of collective, power-critical commitments, which will continue to grow collaboratively via a shared Padlet.

A Shared Commitment to Change

The meeting closed with a strong sense of openness, mutual respect, and motivation. A shared energy emerged – one of solidarity, creativity, and honest dialogue. One thing was clear: empowerment begins with the courage to change – starting with our own practices. The journey has begun, and we’re excited to continue it together.
